A Giving Heart by Delina Hill-Brooker

I remember growing up, we didn’t have much, and I’m not using the term “much” lightly. Mom never hid the fact that we were poor, and that she didn’t always know how she would make sure that everything was taken care of. However, she didn’t dwell on our uncertain circumstances because somehow things always did work out. “God always provides,” were the words that she always used to remind us. Now that I am older, I am realizing that it wasn’t just the day to day things that were provided. I remember Brother Martin from church took our family to the Indianapolis Zoo, I was the oldest child in the house, and even though I was only about 12, I paid attention to the price of each ticket, 2 adults & 3 children…he paid cash for them. That alone was more than enough; even though my childish eyes. After a few hours we ate at the zoo – every one knows how expensive that is. “Order whatever you want.” In my mind I was overwhelmed. This simple act of kindness of someone helping a struggling single mother with 3 kids simply enjoy a day at the zoo with no worries always plays through my mind. He didn’t have to do it. It may have been a small thing for him, but I still remember it to this day.

In my lifetime there have been many acts of kindness bestowed upon me. Most of them I never had to ask for, people saw the need, or were in a position to simply help. I have NEVER forgotten or taken for granted ANY act of kindness from others. I just try to model that any time that I am able. It’s not about money, it could be as simple as visiting an elderly neighbor, giving a couple a much needed night out by watching their children, or even just listening and giving advice when needed. You can do things for people that you don’t even know. I remember how happy my friend was when someone paid for her breakfast in line at McDonald’s. That random act of kindness really made her day.

You should never give for the glory of recognition or to get something back, but what I do know is the more you give, the more will be given to you. ~ There’s a song that says that too. 😉

You can’t beat Gods giving, no matter how hard you try.
